OF TRUSTEES

Anesh Dhayanan Soonder
Chairperson of the Board

Qualifications: Master of Laws (LLM) – University of South Africa, 2008; Bachelor of Laws (LLB) – University of Natal – Durban, 1997; Bachelor of Arts (BA) Law – University of Natal, 1995; Certificate in Compliance Management and completion of Finance for Non-Financial Managers – WITS.

Experience highlights: Currently provides varied specialised legal services, including overall fund risk and compliance management and audits (Director of Soonder Incorporated Attorneys — current). Previous positions held: COO of Momentum Industrial Funds and he sits on various fund related boards and is also the Principal Officer of the Hollard Staff Pension & Provident Funds.

Kutlwano Mokhele
Trustee

Qualifications: BSc(Hons) in Actuarial Science (WITS); Exams for Associate Membership of Actuarial Society of South Africa Completed; Representative in Category I and & Key Individual in Categories I, II, IIA, III & VI (under FAIS Act).

Experience Highlights: Currently Member Benefits Coordinator at NUMSA, a role that includes amongst others participation on boards of funds and schemes that NUMSA members belong to – through this role I has been appointed to a number of Boards of Trustees. Prior role at NUMSA, worked at Matlotlo Group, a quantative and actuarial consulting and advisory firm where he consulted across all actuarial practice fields (life and  non-life insurance, healthcare, banking, finance and investments). Through his employment at Matlotlo Group, also consulted for Moruba Consultants & Actuaries, a subsidiary of Matlotlo Group focusing on consulting and advisory in the retirement fund and employment benefits fields. Kutlwano is currently left with one exam for attain Fellow Membership to the Actuarial Society of South Africa (“fully qualified actuary”).   

Frank van der Zon
Trustee

Experience highlights: Trustee Frank van der Zonn gained valuable experience running a family-owned fuel station since 1988, and owns and operates several stations over the past three decades. Frank has also acquired his Diploma in Marketing Management. Frank’s involvement with the Funds dates back to 2001. He has been an Alternate Trustee for over a decade, while serving on the Claims Committee. Frank has made every effort to ensure that decisions taken, are in the best interest of the members and the funds. His mission is to maintain good governance at all times.

Mantuka Maisela
Independent Trustee and Chairperson of the Investment Committee

Qualifications: Master’s Degree in Management(WITS), 2000; Leadership Development Programme — Wharton Business School (University of Pennsylvania), 1999; Production Management (Kyushu International Cooperation Agency —Japan), 1993: Post Graduate Diploma in Management (WITS), 1993.

Experience highlights: Currently CEO of Khomolema Consulting (Pty) Ltd (Business strategy and Human Capital consultancy); Previous positions held: Vice President (Human Capital) PETROSA; CEO (Human Capital Development and Executive Director) of Bridging the Gap; Group HR Director of Murray & Roberts Holdings and Group Health and Safety Director of RUC Holdings (a division of Murray & Roberts). Mantuka is also currently Chairperson of Eskom’s Pension and Provident Fund and sits on the boards of MIRF and the Government Employees Pension Fund.

Hermann Köstens
Chairperson of Claims Committee

Qualifications: Master of Business Administration (MBA)— Business School in Netherlands, 2004; attended lectures in conjunction with University of Cape Town (UCT) and Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS); Master Thesis (with credit); Determining the impact of organisational culture on the success of mergers, accredited National: CHE and SAQA and International: (Europe) DVC, IMCA USA: DETC; Certificate in Industrial Relations University of Cape Town (UCT), 1990 and National Diploma in Personnel Management Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), 1989.

Experience highlights: Currently CEO Strategy and Development at Motor Industry Staff Association (MISA). Previous positions held: Strategy and Development Manager at MISA HO; Regional Manager at MISA Western Cape; Regional Manager at MISA KZN; Assistant to Admin Manager at Ford Salzburg, Austria 1991: Assistant Admin Manager at Spoerle Electronics (BMW Supplier) Germany.

Management

Radesh Maharaj
Principal Officer of the five Motor Industry Retirement Funds (MIRF).

Qualifications: B.Com (Hons) and LLB degrees (with Dean’s Commendation in final year of law studies) from the University of Natal, now known as the University of KZN. Radesh was admitted as an attorney by the Natal Provincial Division of the High Court (August, 1999) and has also completed the Regulatory Examination I in terms of the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services Act.  Radesh has lectured on financial management and for the past twelve years has been a guest lecturer at Unisa’s Certificate Programme in Pensions Law.

Experience highlights: Currently Principal Officer at Motor Industry Retirement Funds (MIRF). Previous positions held: Senior legal advisor to the Deputy Registrar of Pension Funds of the Financial Services Board (FSB) and legal advisor to the Pension Funds Adjudicator (PFA). In addition, Radesh has written several ground-breaking determinations for the PFA as well as pension fund articles for the SA Attorney’s Journal and Law Society of South Africa. At the time of leaving the PFA he was a member of its management committee.
